It is time for the final push
All the polls and pundits tell us that these races, up and down the ticket, will be close and we can expect record voter turn-outs. This makes every vote, your vote, critically important.
In Door County, for these final three weeks, volunteers will be going door-to-door making sure that every Democratic voter that we have identified in the past 5 months does vote.
Some people are voting absentee or are voting early, but most will wait and vote on election day. Our canvassers will make sure that every Democratic leaning voter gets to the polls. In past tight elections, candidates have won by an average of 3 votes per ward.
So, we urge you to make a concrete plan to vote. If you need time off work to go vote, let your supervisor know. If you need a ride to the polls, set it up now. If you need childcare, make arrangements now. No excuses on election day!
Our outstanding candidates
For President: Kamala Harris
For Vice President: Tim Walz
For US Senator: Tammy Baldwin
For US Congress: Kristin Lyerly
For State Representative: Renee Paplham
They have each done their part, now it is time for you to do yours… VOTE!
Also, we urge you to VOTE NO on the State-wide Referendum.
It is redundant and part of the larger Republican voter suppression efforts. You already must be a citizen to vote in Wisconsin elections.
What we are up against
On his Saturday morning CNN show, Michael Smerconish polled his audience:
Which is a more potent Election emotion: hope or fear?
The results he reported were 59% FEAR and 41% HOPE.
Does this accurately reflect you own personal experience? Perhaps it tells you why it is so difficult to have meaningful conversations with people, even close family members, friends and neighbors with whom you disagree. Could it be that you aren’t talking about what people’s votes actually represent/ mean? Attacking someone who is already feeling afraid only increases their level of fear.
Many of us struggle to understand the “Trump phenomenon”. Our mantra is “How could anyone vote for him?” Ultimately to get anywhere in such a conversation we must ask “Why are you so afraid?” which opens the door to a conversation that is meaningful to us as well as to the other person. It transcends even conversations about VALUES and puts us in the context of Maslow’s hierarchy of NEEDS. Trump-ism gives people who need it something to cling to when everything they value seems under attack or lost.
The day 60 Minutes was here
On Wednesday, Oct. 9, CBS’s crew from their 60 Minutes program was here to film the pop-up event on Michigan Ave. 90 people rallied to show their support for Democratic values and candidates.
Who said we can’t turn out when the cameras are rolling? If the segment makes it past the editor’s cutting room floor, it should be broadcast on the October 20 program.
