The April Board of Directors Meeting was a Joyful Celebration of hard work by more than 100 volunteers in Door County who did everything from hosting coffees to writing postcards, from knocking on doors to staffing outreach tables at events, from walking in parades to pounding signs into frozen ground. This in addition to over 50 people who made generous contributions.

The results were that we carried the County for Judge Janet Prototasiewicz by 3% points greater than the state average.  Through the TriCounty Influencers Campaign we helped Kewaunee and Brown Counties do better than expected. We made sure voters in NE Wisconsin knew who Daniel Kelly truly was, how he would vote and who his supporters were.

Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler predicts that shortly after she is sworn in on August 1, lawsuits “challenging the constitutionality of our rigged legislative maps” and “challenging the 1849 abortion ban” will make their way to the Supreme Court.  What a difference an election makes!

Tammy Baldwin makes it official, she will be running again in 2024 to represent Wisconsin, that’s you and me and all of us, in the US Senate for another term. NE Wisconsin will be key to victory.

The vetting process for candidates begins NOW!

The process of recruiting, vetting, setting up a campaign structure and winning begins now for potential 2024 candidates. Family and close friends conversations are already beginning for people considering running for Circuit Judge to take Judge Ehler’s vacant seat, and against Joel Kitchens for State Representative and Michael Gallagher for US Congress.

We have proven that Democrats can win and that we have the hub of a campaign structure so that candidates will not have to “reinvent the wheel.”  We also have lots of resources for candidates wondering how a campaign is run, how fund raising works, how the Democratic Parties of Door County and Wisconsin can help.

There are many reasons people decide to run for elected office. Some have an issue they are passionate about and see their campaign as an opportunity to build a coalition of concerned people to fight for their cause. Others dislike the way the Courts, State or Country are being run and know that they could do better. Others see elected office as the best way to serve their friends, neighbors and communities.

The recent events in Tennessee were vivid examples of successful campaigns. The two candidates that were evicted from the Tennessee legislature went back to their supporters and said “What we worked for was too important to let die.” And their supporters said “We got your back…. When do you want us to be where?”

Our Board Chair Writes the Door County Board re. Run-Off Contamination

Dear Door County Board of Supervisors,
The Democratic Party of Door County stands by our mission to work on public policy for the public good and for this reason we are writing today. We are concerned about the operations from agricultural run-off contaminates affecting our water supply in Door County and Lake Michigan. Our beautiful county depends on clean water, as a result, we are very concerned about the potential expansion of the permit requested by S & S Jerseyland Dairy.

While we understand this permit expansion requires DNR and state approval, we know that Kewaunee County has had a successful Ground- water Protection Ordinance since 2013. This type of county ordinance would also benefit Door County, especially Southern Door. Can the Door County Board of Supervisors please consider doing more research to assure our water quality in the future and consider investigating and potentially implementing a similar ordinance as Kewaunee, but using our own topographic data?

We stand against any expansion without a thorough investigation of our topography. It is my understanding that several requests have been made to the Board since 2019 about this kind of ordinance. As time goes on, the situation becomes more critical, and the fate of our county lies in your hands. We work for our citizens to have equal rights and opportunities to live meaningful secure lives. Roads, air quality, private wells, and wildlife are just a few of the attributes that people come to our county for, but these sustainable attributes have already been negatively impacted by current CAFO operations. We cannot imagine an increase, albeit a doubling, of the operations at S & S, and the unfathomable aftermath that will be left in its wake. Most of the fields in Southern Door County have less than 20 feet of top-soil and are currently unable to fully absorb the immense amount of waste generated currently by the CAFOs. Phosphorous levels in Millpond have tripled between 1997 and 2018 from agricultural run-off.

Door County needs an ordinance like Kewaunee County. The urgency is increased due to the requested expansion by S & S. Please consider investigating this type of ordinance for Door County. It is sad when we hear from people who don’t want to travel to Door County any more because of the beach closure alerts and poor drinking water.

We need your help and leadership to keep our beautiful Door County a wonderful place to live and visit.

All the best,
Kris Sadur
Chair, Democratic Party of Door County
