VOTE NO and NO August 13

The Assembly Republicans are at it again, rushing Constitutional Referendums through the approval process and hiding them in low turnout elections. The two Referendums on the August 13 ballot would limit the powers of the governor and make it harder for him to marshal resources in times of need and disaster.  Both the League of Women Voters and the Democratic Party of Wisconsin urge you to reject them.

Great candidates deserve your enthusiastic support

The upcoming November 5 elections will be both top – down and bottom – up elections. President Biden and Senator Baldwin will carry the top,  Renee’ Paplham (Assembly) and Kristin Lyerly (Congress) will carry the local elections.

All four candidates have websites where you can learn about them and their campaigns and donate to help them win. They are all worthy of your enthusiastic support.

The Biden debate mess is now behind us. He has had numerous strong events since, both scripted and not. He can beat Trump if we all work together to make it happen. Watch the Democratic Party’s National Convention August 19- 22.

The office and signs

Our hope is to have the office open 7 days a week from noon to 6:00 with two shifts each day. We have about half the shifts scheduled so we still need volunteers and subs primarily for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.  We can work around vacations and family visits. Training is available and, most of the time, it is a really good experience.  Please consider volunteering!  Leave a message at the office (920-365-1047) for Brenda Lange or Nancy Kidd to get more information.

One of the main office jobs is distributing signs. Right now we have Biden/ Harris, Vote for Democrats, Baldwin, Lyerly and Paplham signs available. We hope for donations from people who want signs, but we don’t require them

Introducing our DPW Door County organizer

Greetings- my name is Caleb Nolan. I am the new regional mobilization manager for Door, Kewaunee, and Winnebago County. I grew up in Chicago and graduated from UW Oshkosh earlier this year with a degree in Political Science. During college I took two semesters off to work as the field organizer for Winnebago County in the 2022 Midterm and 2023 Spring Election. Here is Door County we have a lot of work to do between now and November, but I am excited because I know that together we will be able to help Democrats win up and down the ballot! I will be reaching out to you about upcoming events, but you can also contact me by email at [email protected] or by phone at 773-877-1272.

Tennessee group challenges diversion of public school money to private schools

A Tennessee law that diverts public school funds to private education by providing vouchers for tuition to private schools that do not have the same quality, accountability and anti-discrimination protection as public schools has been challenged in court. The Tennessee Court of Appeals has allowed the case to move forward. The challenge has national applicability in states with similar voucher programs.

UPDATE on the Forestville Dam drawdown

The Friends of the Forestville Dam invite you to a July 24, 6:00pm community gathering at Forestville Dam County Park, 7762 County Hwy. J, Forestville. The Friends will update and answer questions about the DNR ordered water level for the dam, current investigations of the drawdown, and any further information that may be pertinent. Special guest will be Renee Paplham who is running for Assembly District 1.

Digesters don’t solve the pollution problems at CAFOs

A June 17 page 3 report in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says that new research conducted by environmental groups show that digesters may do more harm than good.

Seen as a solution to pollution from large-scale livestock farms/ CAFOs, digesters incentivize large farms to grow even larger to produce even more biogas and solid byproducts.  According to the research, the number of cows in Kewaunee County has increased by 88%, while the number of dairy farms has decreased by 82% due to consolidation or closures.

The crisis is that those digester products must be dealt with and each has its own negative environmental impact.  Excess gas impacts air quality and adds to greenhouse gas. Solid byproducts are usually spread on fields impacting water quality and nutrient levels.

Scholarship winner featured

The winner of this year’s DP-DC Future of Democracy scholarship, Isabella Dereszkiewicz-Hodowany, was featured in a June 21-28 Peninsula Pulse article by Deb Fitzgerald.  As it turns out, Isabella spent September- June of this, her junior year, serving as a page in Washington to Sen. Tammy Baldwin.

Of her experience she is quoted as saying “At first, I wanted to be in politics because I liked it, but now, I have to be because I need to make sure things get done.”
