The Issue That Will Determine Who Wins In November

“This year every federal race – for House, Senate and President – will be a referendum on whether or not we should have a national abortion ban…  Every Wisconsin legislative race will be a referendum on our state’s abortion ban.”

So wrote Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler.

Reproductive health is a fundamental right that includes access to safe abortion services. For voters this year protecting those rights is connected to protecting democracy, free speech, fair elections and all the values we share as Democrats.

We must elect progressive leaders that will move us forward.

Teens Making A Difference

If you missed it, the first Peninsula Pulse Newspaper of the year (January 4) featured an article by editor Debra Fitzgerald on DP-DC youth Board member Yana Zenefski.

Under the subtitle of “Teens Making A Difference,”  Fitzgerald listed a dizzying number of organizations Zenefski actively participates in both locally and nationally.  These include the High School Democrats of America for which she serves as Wisconsin’s Vice Chair, Midwest Regional Director and the National Disability Caucus Vice Chair.

“Football to others is like government to me” she is quoted as saying.

The full article is published on this website.

Most important currently, Zenefski is campaigning to be an 8th Congressional District delegate to the August Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

WI Supreme Court Orders New Maps

The Wisconsin Supreme Court has ordered that new electoral districts be drawn in time for the November elections.  The court ruled 4-3 that the current maps are unconstitutional because districts as they are currently drawn are not contiguous.

Dan Lenz, an attorney for Law Forward, which brought the original lawsuit, called the ruling “a victory for a representative democracy in the state of Wisconsin… For too long gerrymandered maps have distorted the political landscape, stifling the voice of the voters.  It challenges the very essence of fair representation and erodes confidence in our political system.”

WI Supreme Court Orders New Maps (c0nt’d)

New maps from various entities will have been presented to the court in mid-January then the wrangling will begin.  The court will hear arguments then presumably release new, redrawn maps in early March unless the Legislature acts first.

T.I.C. Expands Its Search For Ways To Reach “Hard To Reach” Voters

The Tri-county Influence Campaign of Brown, Door and Kewaunee counties is expanding its search for ways to reach “Hard To Reach Voters” including young women voters, rural voters and Hispanic voters.

Stereotypically, these voters are unlikely to read newspapers, to watch television news programs, to listen to news radio or to come to party sponsored events.  Yet, the election may be won or lost depending on their level of knowledge and enthusiasm.

TIC is asking for input from everyone with ideas including marketing firms, focus groups, event participants, school groups, party members, etc.  Is it possible to use targeted ads within social media platforms like TicToc? Can music streaming platforms like Spotify be harnessed to project messages? Will specific issue promotions generate engagement?

Two years ago TIC sponsored the highly successful “Vote for Democrats, They Vote for US” campaign. It was impossible to keep signs in the office and the billboards were constantly referenced. Radio ads helped clarify the issues and the reasons for voting for Democrats.

Now, the stakes are even higher.
